Registration and parking will be at the Novant Gateway Family Practice at 390 West Salem Avenue. The Cycling Sunday route will start at the Southeast Gateway, go north on Old Salem Road to Cemetery Street then return by Salem Avenue. Please note that the southbound lanes of Old Salem Road will remain open—only the northbound lanes will be closed for the event. Participants will get a chance to see bike lanes on Salem Avenue even though they won’t need to use them since there will be no traffic on the route. Cycling Sunday also welcomes walkers, skaters, skateboarders as well as people of all ages on bikes.
The Children’s Museum at Liberty Street and Brookstown Ave. near the route, will host Stars Wars Day on May 20 from 1-5 PM for families who would like to make a side trip from Cycling Sunday. The cost is $8 for museum members and $10 for non-members. In preparation for Cycling Sunday, families may also want to attend the museum’s Bike Safety Day on Saturday, May 19 from 10 AM to 1 PM. There is no charge for this event.
Other points of interest on and near the new routes include Old Salem village and God’s Acre Cemetery, with views of Piedmont Triad Research Park. The Strollway is easily accessible for those who want to visit the main part of downtown Winston-Salem.
Volunteers are needed to help with registration and serve as route monitors. All volunteers receive a special Cycling Sunday Volunteer t-shirt. If you can help, contact Lynne Mitchell at 703-3110 or mitchelm@forsyth.cc
