National Nutrition Month: New WIC Food Package Changes
The New WIC Food package change went into effect on October 1st 2015. The main change in the infant food package was the switch from Gerber to Similac as our standard formula. The new food choices for women and children include whole grain pasta and yogurt; which means more options to make healthy meals. Please see a list of changes below:
Foods for Infants (Birth-12 months)
- Mother’s breastmilk
- Infant formula
- Infant cereal
- Infant fruits and vegetables
- Infant meats (for fully breastfed infants only)
Foods for Women and Children
- Milk (whole for 1 year olds, and skim/1% for ages 2 and up)
- Cereal
- Whole-grain bread, brown Rice, whole-wheat/soft-corn tortillas, whole grain pasta
- Fruit and vegetables
- Juice
- Cheese
- Yogurt
- Tofu
- Soy-based beverage
- Dried or canned beans, peas and lentils
Additional Foods for Women who Solely Breastfeed
- Larger quantities of the foods listed above
- Chunk-light Tuna or Salmon
