The Forsyth County Department of Social Services (FCDSS) honored foster parents on the final day of National Foster Care Month on May 31.
Foster families were treated to a spaghetti dinner served by Social Services staff. Foster parents were given a certificate and a portfolio as a token of appreciation. Foster parents and kids also received beach toys and accessories during a raffle.
John Thacker, director of the Family & Children’s Division at DSS, said it was a small way for Social Services to thank these families.
“We appreciate everything that you do,” said Thacker. ”You are blessings.”
Children enter Foster Care when the court finds they are unsafe, abused or neglected. Foster families take care of the children while Social Services works with the birth family to rectify the reasons for the separation with the goal of reuniting the child or children with their birth family.
If children are unable to return to a safe home with their birth family, then Social Services works to legally free them so they can be adopted. If that happens, the foster family could be considered as a possible forever family.
There are currently 56 foster care families in Forsyth County and there is a constant need for more. Interest meetings for prospective foster and adoptive families are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at DSS, 741 Highland Ave, at 6-7 p.m. For more information on becoming a foster family, contact Sharon Porter at 336-703-3677.
